2018 Movies Retrospective

films romantiques

I spent way too much time at the movie theater or watching Netflix (but hey, no regrets!). and 2018 brought a diverse range of movies that kept me entertained, inspired, and maybe even a little emotional. Join me as I revisit some of the best (and maybe a few not-so-great) movies I saw last year.

If you are a fan of 90's romantic comedies like Clueless and Legally Blonde, you will surely love these movies. They’re light and fun to watch and sometimes cheesy, but in a good safety blanket way.

The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before are both teen meet-cute movies. Out of the two, The Kissing Booth is the funniest, but both are really cute (although don't expect anything close to the level of the iconic 10 Things That I Hate About You).

Sierra Burgess is a Loser isn't your typical high school rom-com. While it has romantic elements, the film leans more heavily on the drama side. It tackles serious issues like bullying and body image, offering a more nuanced look at the teenage experience.

Crazy Rich Asians is the first major Hollywood romantic comedy with a full Asian cast, bringing Kevin Kwan's bestselling novel to life! Prepare for a whirlwind romance that's equal parts Cinderella fantasy and over-the-top extravagance, showcasing the world of Singapore's wealthiest elite.

I Feel Pretty takes a quirky premise: a woman with low self-esteem wakes up believing she's a supermodel. While the movie aims to promote body positivity and the power of confidence, the execution falls flat. The core idea has potential, but the humor (especially if you're not an Amy Schumer fan) might miss the mark. Honestly, the trailer was more entertaining than the actual film.

Destination Wedding might be my personal favorite out of all the romcoms I watched lately, maybe because it has both of my fav actors, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves, who played a grumpy man who despise love, couples, and most of all marriage.

thriller and sci fi movies

I really enjoyed watching these captivating movies with well conceived story lines and great acting, topped with a lot of intrigue and mystery. A cinematic roller coaster!

Bird Box throws humanity into a terrifying fight for survival! Imagine an unseen force driving people to madness – a force you can only confront blindfolded. This film follows a desperate struggle as characters navigate a ravaged world, relying on touch and sound to stay alive.

A Quiet Place :Did I say this is a chef d'oeuvre? It's an extremely eerie movie, shot in total and utter silence. Unlike the creatures in Bird Box, the ones in this movie react to sound, so the only way to escape these monsters is to live, cook, play, or do anything in deafening silence, which is quite chilling!

Annihilation is a visually stunning and intense sci-fi film that left me speechless! A team of scientists ventures into "The Shimmer," a mysterious quarantined area with strange and horrifying mutations. The film blends elements of drama, horror, and mystery, creating a truly unsettling and unforgettable experience. I couldn't stop thinking about the movie's themes and the mind-bending journey it took me on.

The Girl on the Train brings Paula Hawkins' gripping psychological thriller to life on the big screen! This film follows Rachel Watson, a troubled woman who becomes obsessed with a seemingly perfect couple she sees from her daily train ride. When the woman disappears, Rachel finds herself entangled in a complex mystery. Having devoured the book, I couldn't wait to see how they would translate the suspense and twists into film.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: This award-winning film is a powerful blend of dark comedy, crime drama, and social commentary. Mildred Hayes, a grieving mother, takes matters into her own hands by renting three billboards to challenge the local police department's inaction in solving her daughter's murder. Expect strong performances and raw emotions. It's a masterpiece!

John Wick Chapters 1 and 2 breathe fresh air into the action genre! These movies follow a retired hitman pulled back into the world of assassins after a brutal act of vengeance against him. Prepare for stunning fight choreography, sleek visuals, and a relentless pursuit of revenge. The first film establishes the unique world of assassins, while the sequel expands upon it, offering even more action and world-building.

marvel movies

Looking back at 2018, it was a banner year for superhero movies and captivating stories on the big screen.

Black Panther: This visually marvelous and culturally significant film takes you to the technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda. Chadwick Boseman shines as T'Challa, the newly crowned king who must defend his country from a past enemy.

Deadpool 2: Ryan Reynolds returns as the wise-cracking anti-hero Deadpool, this time assembling a team to protect a young mutant. Prepare for non-stop laughs, outrageous action, and a healthy dose of fourth-wall-breaking humor, all delivered in Deadpool's signature style.

Looking for a fun and action-packed escape? Ant-Man and the Wasp deliver! Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) reunite to tackle a new mission that puts their shrinking and growing powers to the test in hilarious and innovative ways. Explore the strange and wonderful quantum realm alongside them in this lighthearted and entertaining film.

Avengers Infinity War is the superhero movie I never knew I needed! This epic culmination of the Infinity Saga brings together Earth's mightiest heroes for their biggest battle yet. Thanos, the Mad Titan, threatens to wipe out half of all life in the universe, and the Avengers must unite to stop him. This film is a love letter to Marvel fans.

Venom: This movie introduces the popular anti-hero Venom. Tom Hardy portrays Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes bonded to an alien symbiote, gaining incredible power but also a monstrous hunger. It's a unique take on the superhero genre, with a darker and edgier tone.

Aquaman: This visually stunning film explores the world of Atlantis and follows Arthur Curry, a reluctant hero who must harness his dual heritage to unite the surface and underwater worlds and prevent a war. While entertaining, it didn't quite reach its full potential.
