What I have been watching in 2018

Here I am with another post! You already know that I love binge watching tv shows so here's what I've been watching in 2018.
If you are into tv shows with crime and mystery The Alienist is one the best discoveries I made in 2018. It stars daniel bruhl, luke evans and dakota fanning who are investigating a serial killer (similar to Jack the Ripper) in very Noir and grim Victorian London, the show does not merely focus on the killer in question but also the struggles which the characters face while trying to uncover the truth as well as their personal hardships in a highly patriarchal and judgmental society. This show knows how to build tension throughout the episode and it made me second guess myself all the time when it came to the identity of the serial killer, a must watch!

Comes next How to Get Away with Murder, the series focuses mainly on the character of Annalyse keating  (PS : Viola Davis is such a good actress ) , a ruthless and successful top lawyer who does not really have a good moral compass nor real ethics for that matter, as she finds herself entangled in a murder along with a number of her students. This show has a unique way of telling each character's story and deepest secrets and relies lots on flash backs and going back and forth in time in order to make things even more suspenseful and it highly succeeds into making us love all these ambiguous and not so good characters.

Big little lies has a big screen movie quality to it and stars renown actresses like reese witherspoon, shailene woodley and nicole kidman, it’s a story of women, their struggles and friendship in a selective suburb where everyone gossips about basically everyone. The show revolves around a big mystery that ends up connecting all these women's stories together. Loved it!

Riverdale is an adaptation of the Archie comics and seemingly targets a younger audience , I did not think i would love this at first but I ended up following Archie, Jughead and all their merry bunch.

I use to love watching korean drama and Liar Game  is one unique one ! The story mainly revolves around various contestants as they take part in a game show with a prize of 10 billion won. The contestant who succeeds into cheating others in this "Liar Game" wins the grand prize, but at what cost? you'll have to watch in order to know!

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is completely different from its 90's counterpart so expect no comedy here nor a talking cat for that matter ( I miss that old talking fluff of Salem), but it's really worth giving a try. It's very spooky as its name suggests but the new Sabrina is as lovable as the old one. The show mainly focuses on her personal struggles to control her witch powers and learn about witch life as a half mortal, but also accept her new identity and this new dark and "occult" part of herself. As the story evolves, Sabrina finds herself confronted with making certain decisions that could change forever who she is.

Mindhunter is a show for crime fiction fans and not the faint of heart! If you want to know some of the stories of the most notorious serial killers in the history of America as well as to know more about how the process of profiling and the world "serial killer" came about to be used within the FBI. This is definitely for you!

The Strain centers around Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the CDC's New York-based Canary Project, who is called upon to investigate an airplane landing where everyone aboard has been found dead. What his team discovers is a viral outbreak that has similarities to an ancient strain of vampirism which they will try to fight back.  So you get it , this show is about vampires ,but unlike shows like True Blood or Vampire Diaries, these vampires are quite nasty looking things so don't expect the usual sexy bad boys vampires we are familiar with. The Strain's vampires or as they called "Strigois" are ugly, ruthless and look like some bald aliens and they only want one thing , eat everyone around !

Outcast is the story of a young man and his search for answers as to why he's been suffering from supernatural possessions his entire life. This show reminded of the show The Exorcist for all the aspects of possession (levitation and all that jazz ). If you're into horror and those spooky stuff ,you will love this !

As for Castle Rock it's not really adapted from a particular Stephen King but draws inspiration from all the world he built throughout his works. It is based in one of  the most eponymous places in all his novels , the accursed town of Castle Rock where many dreading stuff have been happening and hints at many of King's previous characters like Cujo or Sheriff Alan Pangborn (Needful Things) so fans will find many easter eggs to discover. The show opens with a mystery , a boy has been found locked in one of the lower cells of the Shawshank Penitentiary , no one knows where he came from nor why he has been there , he also seems to have disturbing powers. The boy is played by Bill Skasgard , the Penny Wise of the It movies , he is already quite an evil looking looking actor so prepare to be spooked!

The Haunting Of Hill House is a not direct adaptation of Shirely Jackson's novel of the same so although this screams horror , it is really not your typical haunted house story with the usual scary ghost scenes and brilliantly succeeds into mixing family drama and horror. The layers of fear the show tries to uncover go beyond Hill House and taps into deep emotional scars and struggles like addiction. In Hill House the ghosts are an instrument but ultimately each character comes to face his own deep seated fears and ghosts. This show is amazing and it has some of the most complex and beautifully shot episodes I have ever watched.

Stranger Things for me is quite a modern and nostalgic show. Its  has a fun 80s vibes and reminded me of classic movies like ET or the Goonies (even starred Sean Astin in season 2) or Ridley Scott's old Aliens movie. So if you're a 80s kid like me at heart you will love following the paranormal adventures of Dustin, Mike, Lucas, Will and Eleven and the whole aesthetic and soundtracks. I myself cannot wait to watch season 3!

As for medical drama shows , two really stood out to me. The first is The Good Doctor which tells the story of Shaun, a young surgeon with autism and Savant syndrome who finds himself recruited into the surgical unit of a prestigious hospital. Shaun is an extremely lovable character so you will find yourself rooting for him all the time The show shines a new light on autism and all the prejudices around it while still having all the excitement of a medical drama.

New Amsterdam is also another show I loved watching. Unlike shows like Grey's anatomy , New Amsterdam focuses on the not so glamorous public health service  and mainly follows a newly appointed medical director who tries to break the rules in order to heal the system of America's oldest public hospital.

So now to two of my all time favorite shows, both tap in the occult and the supernatural and are adapted from comics themselves. Preacher tells the story Jessey Custer a preacher in the remote town in Texas who finds himself one night with the inexplicable powers  of an entity straight out of heaven called "Genesis", add to this a bunch of angels, a hundred years old Irish Vampire called Cassidy,  Jessey's ex who herself is not just a normal childhood sweetheart and a whole lot of exciting action scenes . One of Preacher's co creators is none other than Seth Rogan so expect dark humor and things to go bat-shit crazy!

Lucifer follows as it names suggests Lucifer Morningstar, the devil himself who following his fall and banishment from heaven decided to become the proud owner of a nightclub in LA called LUX. Yet, our Lucifer with a British accent , who is played by the ravishing Tom Ellis if that does not encourage you to watch this show, finds himself entangled with Chloe a former actress turned LA PD investigator and the two become a duo of detectives solving crime and helping the innocents. Let's not forget the other great characters like the Angel Menedil (also Luci's brother) and Mazekin the former demoness/Luci's hunch person in Hell who make the show even more entertaining!

The People v O.J Simpson stands between a crime fiction show and a documentary, it really tries to be as faithful as possible to the events, the persons involved and the court hearings. However , what I found amazing with this show is how it portrayed O.J Simpson and made the audience part of trying to figure out if he was really guilty of the crime in question through subtle hints. Robert Kardashian, O.J Simpson's defense attorney and friend is played by David Schwimmer and the show is expected to spotlight each season a new American crime story ,but I have yet to watch season 2 which features the Assassination of Gianni Versace.

My final show on this list is Doctor Who, this show has been around for so many years now and is a staple in the sci-fi genre. If you never heard of this show I'll try to make it simple. Doctor Who follows throughout its numerous seasons The Doctor , a Time Lord (an alien specie that looks like humans but has the ability to travel through time thanks to a machine called a Tardis) and his human companion (because yes he needs someone) as they travel through planets, time and eras. This is a really fun show, that can take you to meet Van Gogh , discover the medieval ages and even get you on Mars to fight some alien species in order to save the galaxy. There's so many seasons but you can watch the latest seasons with my favorite Doctor played by Matt Smith (in season 5, 6 and 7 ) and later on Peter Capaldi (in season 8, 9 and 10), because yes I forgot to explain that the doctor regenerates throughout the seasons and so the most recent Doctor is  played by Jodie Wittaker in season 11. So if you like science fiction, space and time travel , this show is definitely for you!

To wrap things up, if you looking for an easy comedy show to watch, I highly recommend The Good Place, Fuller House, New Girl and Santa Clarita Diet (yes zombie humor can be funny) ,but my personal picks would be master of none and Braindead. Master Of None features aziz ansari and is not the type of comedy we are used. It's a witty show that features quite an intelligent and subtle critique of love, life and society. As for Braindead, which has among its cast actors like Tony Shalhoub whom we all know from Monk,  it succeeds at the impossible : mixing aliens, politics and humor at the same time.
